Competition entry: Artistic and architectural – urban – landscape conceptual design for a memorial to the Croatian defenders of the Homeland War in Rovinj – Rovigno.
At the entrance to Rovinj’s old town, next to the Center for Marine Research of the Ruđer Bošković Institute, a public space has been designed to honor the Croatian veterans of the Homeland War in Rovinj.

The concept emerges from the spatial context—an area of constant movement, dominated by a ring-shaped sculpture. The ring embraces an existing tree with its form, symbolically creating a union of life, freedom, and eternal gratitude.
The spatial organization is shaped as a square that naturally blends with pedestrian flows and allows slowing down. Fluid lines, carefully leveled green areas, and an orientation toward the views of the old town and the sea guide movement and sightlines toward the central motif—the sculpture and the tree as a unified space of contemplation.

Materials were chosen following the theme and character of the location. The square’s paving is made of exposed aggregate concrete, the monument is crafted from natural-finish aluminium, and the vegetation is composed of local plant species that require minimal maintenance. The lighting is discreet and integrated into the space. The project creates a calm, dignified space for remembrance, yet one that is also meant for everyday use.
