Kindergarten

On the gentle slopes of Žminj, in a natural depression, a new kindergarten is located. The outdoor area is envisioned for play, learning, outdoor activities, and connection with nature. The design goes beyond functionality—it extends the architecture and childhood: a space of freedom, movement, and imagination.

The “vala” (sinkhole) is the conceptual foundation of the design. The central part of the space has a gentle slope, while the eastern and southern edges feature softer and steeper inclines. The shaped terrain—mounds, slopes, and gentle hills—is not hidden but encourages play and exploration. The space is divided into four zones: an area for toddlers, a motor skills zone for older children, an amphitheater for daily activities, and an educational garden in the lowest part.

The main path organically connects all zones, changing width and form, and central Istria’s cultural and landscape specifics inspire its design. Play elements are not strictly defined. They encourage open, creative play without instructions, making kindergarten a space for children to discover.
